Our History
South Coast Counseling was founded by a former Jesuit Priest, Jack Callanan, and is currently under the direction of former resident, Jack Motley.
This residential treatment program for both women and men is now celebrating 45 years of helping people stop abusing drugs and alcohol.
The impetus for SCC was derived primarily from Jack Callanan’s desire to honor his mother who died of an alcohol-related illness and his ambition to spare others the debilitation effects of addiction to mood-altering chemicals. Upon retiring from the priesthood after 23 years and gaining employment as a licensed marriage and family therapist, Mr. Callanan witnessed firsthand the devastation of alcoholism, both personally and professionally. He purchased a duplex in Santa Ana, CA with the express purpose of “creating a community of men and women who would love each other and help each other recover.” Focusing primarily on late stage/low bottom alcoholics, his unique approach proved successful and over the next 30 years SCC expanded to 5 additional properties in the Orange County area including the well-established Plumer Street residence. During the mid-1990’s, with retirement imminent, Mr. Callahanan began to downsize SCC. He reluctantly began selling these properties. In 2000, after managing the Plumer Street residence for over 18 years, former resident Jack Motley was named Executive Director, a position he currently holds.
Jack Motley is a caring and highly regarded addiction professional and he works closely with every client that our rehab center helps. We hope that you will call him today by dialing 949-642-0180.
